Social Media Myths – Busted!

Home Business Tips Social Media Myths – Busted!

September 15, 2016

“Social media isn’t for me because of ______”.

We’ve heard this phrase a lot. And we get it. Social media can be really confusing. There are thousands of articles online with conflicting stories about what works, what doesn’t, and what the next big thing is.

A lot of our clients have shared why they think social media isn’t for them. After hearing their stories, we realized there are a lot of myths about social media.

Today, we’re debunking those myths so you can start using social media to grow your reach and gain new customers.

1. Social Media Takes Too Much Time

Okay, we admit that we used to think this too. Before the creation of awesome scheduling tools, social media DID take up a lot of time. There are a lot of great social media management tools out there that allow you to schedule posts in advance, so you can spend one day scheduling posts for the week, instead of doing it every day. These tools are inexpensive (many offer free options!) and will save your hours.

2. You Can’t Make Money

We know for a fact you can make money through social media because we have! One of our best clients contacted us because she saw an Instagram post. No joke!

Still not convinced? Our client Jamie, of Glam Studio, books at least one client a week directly from her Facebook page. People message her about making a hair appointment, she checks her schedule, and sets it up right on the spot. A lot of those clients have never even been to her website. If you think you can’t make money on social media, think again!

3. I Need A Bunch Of Followers To Be Successful

A lot of people will tell you that you need thousands of followers to ever make a difference on social media. There are even websites that allow you to purchase followers to help your numbers. (Side note: don’t ever pay for social media followers) While it’s nice to have thousands of followers, it won’t help unless those followers are actually interested in what you have to offer.

Social media is about quality, not quantity. When we got that client through Instagram, we had less than 100 followers on our account. While her numbers are on the rise, Jamie, of Glam Studio has 244 followers on her Facebook page that books her one new appointment a week. This proves that you don’t need a ton of followers to be successful, you just need the right followers. If you are engaging with people that want your services, you will be successful.

4. I Need Every Social Media Platform

We actually wrote about this topic a few months back. Some people will tell you that you need to be on every platform to be successful, but we’ve found that focusing on two or three generally works better. If you’re posting everywhere, you’ll likely get burned out fast. Find out where your customers are and get in front of them. Remember, you can always add more in the future.
