Hi, I’m Mark.

And I’m Barbara.

And we’re Wicky Design.

And today, we want to talk about photography websites and specifically, 5 different things you can do to improve a photography website.

Photography is a really competitive industry, so having a great website really does help you stand out from the crowd. So we’re going to go over 5 things that you can do right now to improve your photography website.

1. Images

The first thing that I want to talk about is images. One of the biggest mistakes I see on photography websites is that they add hundreds of images. As a photographer, you probably have hundreds, or not thousands, of images from your previous photoshoots, but that doesn’t mean that you have to add all of those images to your website.

Instead, focus on adding the best images. The images of the work that you’re most proud of. Photoshoots that you got to get really creative on. Photoshoots that you’re really proud of. You want to show off what you’re capable of doing. You don’t have to show off everything that you’ve done. That’s the point of your website – to really showcase your best work. So select the best images for your website and display those.

2. Image Optimization

The second thing you can do to improve your photography website is to optimize your images. Now, if you’re not optimizing your images before you upload them, there’s a really good chance that you’re uploading what they call the raw size or uncompressed size. You want to make sure that you aren’t uploading massive files to your website.

This is for a lot of different reasons and one of the biggest ones is page loading. This means that every time that somebody is going to your website and let’s say you uploaded 20 images that were 10MB each, each time somebody goes to your website they are going to have to download each one of those. So you need to get into the habit of compressing your images before you upload them to your website.

Now, there are a lot of different ways that you can do this. You can:

  • Manually do it through Photoshop or any other compression tools online
  • You can download a WordPress plugin that will do this for you

There are a lot of different ways that you can do this, you just have to make sure that you are doing it.

The great thing is that we’ve created a blog article on how to do this.

The link is in the description below. Make sure you check that one out.

3. Alt Tags

The third tip for a photography website is to add alt tags to your images. So you may be asking yourself, “What are alt tags?” Well, alt tags are used to describe your image. They are mainly used for web accessibility reasons because people with screen readers rely on those alt tags to have the screen reader describe the image to them.

But they can also really help with your SEO because Google uses them for their image search. So go through your website and make sure that you’re adding alt tags to all of the images on your site. Being that you’re a photographer, you’re probably going to have a pretty image heavy website, so this is a really good opportunity to improve your website’s accessibility and help with your SEO.

Now, if you have a WordPress website, this is pretty easy to do.

  • You would just go into your media library.
  • Click on the image that you want to add alt tags to.
  • And then, on the right hand side, there’s this block where it says “Alternative text”.
  • That’s where you would add the description to the image.

4. Blog

Number 4 is take advantage of your blog. Your blog is a great platform to showcase any recent projects you’ve done and keep your followers up to date on what’s going on. The best part is, it’s going to help your SEO overall. Google loves if you have a consistent blog that you’re updating on a regular basis. So stick to keeping your blog up to date.

One of the things that we love to say is, if you’re a photographer, showcase your blog posts on your social media platforms. Especially like Instagram, Pinterest – anything along those lines. That’s going to help you grow your following.

5. FAQs

The last tip we have for improving your photography website is to include an FAQs section. As a photographer, you probably get asked some of the same questions over and over again, so having a FAQs section on your website will help eliminate some of that back and forth and create a valuable page for your users. We recommend either adding the FAQs to your contact page or, if you have a lot of FAQs, just create a separate page just for those FAQs listed with the question and the answer to follow.
