While social media is important for marketing, keeping up with it can be challenging. While we believe it’s important to be active on social media, there can be a lot of distractions attached to it. It’s so easy to get sucked in.
Ooh, that post got 5 new likes! So and so is following me on Twitter! Wait, did I lose 10 Instagram followers today?
We’ve been there! While social media can be fun and rewarding, it can also be a giant time suck that can cause serious burn out. So how do you stay focused while still being social? Read these tips below.
Figure Out Your Real End Game
It’s awesome to see a response to a post, likes on a photo, or new followers, but is that really what you’re after? Probably not.
At the end of the day, you’re in business to make money, and guess what? You can use social media to make more money even if you don’t have that many followers or likes. We got one of our best clients through Instagram when we had less than 100 followers, so we really believe in quality over quantity. While we are always trying to grow our network, we spend less time looking at our notifications and more time trying to connect with people that may have a need for our services. Instead of constantly checking for new likes and followers, we focus more on answering questions (thoughtfully) and engaging in conversations.
Turn Off Notifications
Push notifications can be super distracting, so if you want to be more productive during the day, turn them off. Your likes, comments and new followers will be there when you get back. Promise.
Schedule
I’ve talked about how much I like social media scheduling tools before (Buffer, FTW!), but another great benefit to them is that they help me from going down what I call a “social media rabbit hole”. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve gone on Pinterest to search for something specific, saw something that caught my eye, then completely forgot why I originally went there! Scheduling your updates allows you to do more in less time and prevents distractions.
Don’t Do It All
There’s no rule saying your business needs to be on every social network. If your Facebook page does nothing to bring you business, but your Twitter rocks, why do you still have a Facebook page? Focus on what works for your business. Remember, quality over quantity. Being awesome on one platform is better than trying to post everywhere.
