People often ask us some form of this question:
How do I get a good website?
This is a hard question to answer since everyone’s business is so different, but I’ll start with what I do know.
It’s not just about design
People get way too caught up with aesthetics. While we are a web design company and want things to look nice, the look of your website is just one piece of the puzzle. I’ve seen plenty of beautiful websites completely fail. A beautiful design means nothing if your audience doesn’t respond to it well.
Good websites can be made on any platform.
The platform you build your website on has very little to do with whether or not it’s a good website. If your site is built with a strategy in mind, it doesn’t matter whether it’s built on WordPress, Squarespace, Wix or just plain HTML.

What are the elements of a good website?
A good website checks these boxes. If you feel like your website doesn’t, then it’s time to rebrand.
1. It Tells Your Story
Your website should really reflect who you are. If it doesn’t, then your visitors will notice. People buy from people, not websites, so you need to make a connection with your audience. That connection comes by telling your story, sharing your values, and letting people know the reason that you started your business.
Tips on telling your story
- Use visuals – Add professional photos of you, your team, and your location to your website. This lets your audience know who they are talking to and work much better than stock photos.
- Share your “why” – People want to know why you started your business. You might be surprised, but many of your clients will relate to you!
2. It Shows Your Expertise
Your website should show the quality of work that you do and the level of expertise that you have. People want to know who you have worked with and what you have done for them. By showcasing this on your website, your visitors can see first hand if you are the right person for their job.
How to show expertise
- Include a portfolio of your best work – Don’t overwhelm people with every single project you’ve ever done. Just show off the projects that you are really proud of.
- Explain the results – Tell your visitors why your client came to you and how you were able to solve their problem
- Include testimonials – Adding client testimonials to your website helps reinforce your expertise.
3. It Accomplishes Your Goals
Do you only have a website because “everyone has a website”? It’s time to rethink your strategy.
If you’re an online business tool, your website is your biggest marketing tool, yet so many people put up websites with no strategy in mind. Whether it’s selling products, capturing emails for leads or just getting people to pick up the phone and call, your website needs reflect that goal and encourage people to do whatever it is you want them to do.

4. It Provides Value
A good website provides valuable content and information to everyone that visits. Think about when you Google something. Usually, you are typing in a question looking for an answer. That’s what everyone else is doing too. If people land on your website and don’t get the answers they are looking for, they will likely go somewhere else to find it. Your website should have the answers to your most frequently asked questions so people have a clear idea of what you can do to help them.
Tips on providing value
- Go through your emails from last week. Are people asking the same questions over and over? That content should be added to your site.
- Share your process on your website so people can get an idea of what to expect when they work with you.
- Share valuable content regularly through blogs or videos.
